Downgrade Docker

Use this procedure to roll back Docker to a specific package version on a Ubuntu 24 LTS system. Perform the downgrade in a staging environment first and confirm that the required Helmut4 workflows and containers continue to operate correctly.

1. Check available versions

for package in docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-ce-rootless-extras; do
    apt-cache madison "$package"
done

Note the exact version strings available for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (noble). Package versions must match the output provided by apt-cache madison.

2. Install the target versions

Replace the versions below if a different target version is required:

sudo apt-get install --allow-downgrades \
    docker-ce=5:29.6.2-1~ubuntu.24.04~noble \
    docker-ce-cli=5:29.6.2-1~ubuntu.24.04~noble \
    containerd.io=2.2.6-1~ubuntu.24.04~noble \
    docker-ce-rootless-extras=5:29.6.2-1~ubuntu.24.04~noble

Review the proposed package changes and confirm the installation when prompted.

3. Restart Docker

sudo systemctl restart containerd docker

4. Verify the installation

Confirm that Docker is running, the expected version is installed, and the required containers are healthy.

If the downgrade is temporary, do not manually remove the version specification from this command until the target environment has been validated. When ready to upgrade normally, install the packages without specifying versions:
